CHS288: Health Communications in the Popular Media - UCLA

For the class CHS288, I conducted a qualitative research project to create Personas for a public health intervention using popular media. I watched YouTube videos about reproductive rights in El Salvador to find messages that would help shape my target population into Personas, and further understand their current beliefs and potential opportunities for health promotion.

My research question was: Does reproductive rights education increase knowledge about reproductive rights and diminish stigma?

• I created codes using the Health Belief Model and Reproductive Rights framework and included new codes from the videos using the subdomains.

• I used a snowball effect because it was challenging to find videos from El Salvador after typing "reproductive rights in El Salvador." Most videos were from international sources. Thus, when I found the first one, I clicked on that channel's subscriptions or the recommended videos to find the videos in my sample.

• I watched a total of 35 videos on six different channels. I identified three themes: pro-choice, news outlets, and religious. These themes and correspondent codes served as the bones to create Personas.
